Networking Tips for Founders

Fundraising and hiring both run on relationships you built before you needed them. How to build them without it becoming a second job.

Build the network before the raise

The worst time to meet an investor is when you need money. The conversation is compressed, the incentives are obvious, and you have no track record with them to point at.

Meet people a year early, send occasional genuine updates, and the raise becomes a continuation rather than a cold start.

Send the update you promised

Investors consistently report that the founders who send regular, honest updates are the ones they remember and back. It is a low bar and almost nobody clears it.

Track who asked to be kept informed and actually keep them informed. That list is an asset.

Chase the introduction

"I'll introduce you to Sarah" is offered constantly and delivered rarely — not from bad faith, but because the person offering has nine other things happening.

A polite reminder a week later converts a meaningful share of offered introductions into real ones. Set it when the offer is made.
